Emanuel Pogatetz played for every team at every age group at the Austrian National Football Association.
He played 41 Games (41-Times in the starting-eleven) for the Youth-Teams and 60 Games (59-Times in the starting-elven) for the Senior National Team. In the All-Time-Statistics of Appearances for the National Team he is at the Moment on place 15.
He made his Debut for the Austrian National Team under head coach Hans Krankl on 18.05.2002 at the age of 19, when coming on as a substitute in the away game against Germany, of all things to be played in the BayArena at Leverkusen, the stadium of his back-then club Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
Emanuel Pogatetz was also part of the National Team at the Euro 2008 at his home country Austria and played the whole 90 Minutes in every single game.
However his participation at the tournament was extremely at risk.
On the one hand he received a red card in the 74 thMinute in the last game of the Qualification for the World Cup in the 2:0 win at home against Ireland, and therefor got banned for 2 Games. Because Austria as the host was already qualified for the Euro 2008 and did not need to go through Qualification, he was not able to serve the ban before the tournament and would have missed the first two games through suspension.
Only a change of FIFA-Regulations shortly before the tournament made it possible for him to serve his ban in friendly games and therefore be able to play right from the start at the Euro 2008.
On the other hand Emanuel Pogatetz criticized the structures of the Austrian Football Federation and also the tactical skills of Coach Josef Hickersberger after a game against Venezuela in September 2006 and therefore was banned temporarily from playing for his country.
Because of his good performances at FC Middlesbrough in the English Premier League the public called for him to be back playing for his country and just in time before the Euro 2008 he made his comeback on 06.02.2008 in a friendly game against Germany at Vienna.
On 26.03.2009 Emanuel Pogatetz was named Captain of the Austrian National Team by head coach Didi Constantini.
