On 01.07.2005 Emanuel Pogatetz completed a permanent move from Bayer 04 Leverkusen to English Premier League side FC Middlesbrough for a transfer fee of 2.71 Million Euros. He signed a 5 Year Deal at the north-east Club.
Also this transfer was quite complicated. After Emanuel Pogatetz rejected a very profitable offer from Spartak Moscow to stay at the club, he got banned for 6 Month for all competitions because of a foul he committed in his last game for the Russian club. In a battle for the ball he accidentally stepped on his opponent’s leg at which it unfortunately got fractured. He received a red Card for the Foul and was banned afterwards.
At last the ban got reduced to 6 Weeks by the Russian Football Federation. In their final decision they considered among other things the fact that Emanuel Pogatetz travelled back to Russia on his own, to apology directly to the player he injured and his family. The also took into consideration that he made it possible for the injured player to have his recovery at the top-class facilities of his former Club Bayer 04 Leverkusen in Germany.
But because he was in the end still banned for 6 weeks, he missed the first three games of the Premier League Season due to his suspension.
Straight away he could gain a spot in the starting Eleven and from now on he was able to compete in the best football League of the World week by week.
With his Goal against Sunderland in the 2005/2006 Premier League Season Emanuel Pogatetz became the first Austrian ever to score in the English Premier League.
Only in his first Season with FC Middlesbrough, Emanuel Pogatetz achieved to reach the UEFA Cup Final under Manager Steve McClaren. Unfortunately he could not feature in the Final because he suffered from a bad face injury at that time. Boro lost the Final 4:0 against FC Sevilla.
During the 5 Years at FC Middlesbrough Emanuel Pogatetz became a Fan Favourite and also got handed the Captains Armband in the 2008/2009 Season by his manager Gareth Southgate.
Because of his never-say-die attitude and his no-nonsense-style he got nicknamed “Mad Dog” by the Middlesbrough Supporters. Also Thierry Henry said in an interview that no Premier League Striker enjoys playing against him and that he is a very uncomfortable Defender to play against.
After FC Middlesbrough was relegated from the Premier League to the Championship (second-highest Division in English football) at the end of the 2008/2009 Season, Emanuel Pogatetz stayed loyal to the club and continued playing for them.
Unfortunately the owner of FC Middlesbrough gradually reduced his financial commitment to the club and as a matter of fact Emanuel Pogatetz could not reach an agreement to extend his current contract once it had expired, although back then it was his wish to stay all his career at his beloved FC Middlesbrough.
