During the Winter Break of the 2015/2016 Bundesliga Season Emanuel Pogatetz left Major League Soccer and returned to Europe. He left the Columbus Crew SC on a free transfer after the MLS Final when he did not extend his contract and joined the German Club 1. FC Union Berlin.
The Club from East Germany (DDR), nicknamed “Die Eisernen” (the irons), plays at the moment in the second German Bundesliga.
The Club is hugely influenced by his own supporters, which for example build the own Stadium “an der Alten Försterei”, and therefore have a special bond to the club and the players.
The Stadium hosts up to 22,012 Supporters including 3,617 seats whilst the rest of the ground remains terracing. The use to capacity is above 90% on average over the course of a season.
All those factors add up to an atmosphere beyond comparison.
So far Emanuel Pogatetz has been a regular starter for the Club.
